Expressive Still Life: Botanicals & Florals

Course Outline

Students will be encouraged to utilise a range different mediums (pencil, pastel and ink and collage) and will be inspired to experiment with new styles and approaches to build up confidence in composition and application - The outline below is flexible and subject to some minor changes depending on weather and participant experience

Week 1: Sketch book study

Students will work in the outdoor space to develop a number of quick sketchbook studies inspired by our lush garden surroundings. One will be chosen to be worked up into an ink drawing/painting

Week 2: Still life Study

This week we will take a deeper delve into composition and perspective and look at how to create 3 dimensional drawings using tone and value. Applying a range of shading techniques in pastel and charcoal. (Still life botanical reference provided)

Week 3: Mark Making

This week we will move on to experiment with expressive mark making using water colour paper, inks and pen. and explore a range of shading and blending techniques 

Week 4 & 5  Final Composition 

This week we will  use what we've learned so far to develop a large piece of work to be completed over the last two sessions. Some participants may choose to abstract their composition or certain elements of the drawing and broad use of colour and mark making techniques will be explored to produce a finished piece of work to a high standard - option to create an acrylic painting for this session
